THE NORTHEAST IS A GREAT PLACE TO RAISE A FAMILY
The Northeast is a great place to build a living. My success is a Northeast story. It’s a story made possible by my family, friends, neighbours, and community.

Raj Dhaliwal, your Ward 5 councillor
Raj is a son, husband, father, brother, Calgarian, neighbour, friend, oil and gas professional, dog lover, soccer player, hockey fan and cricket enthusiast. And sometimes a guy with the best summer BBQ ideas!
Growing up in Northeast Calgary
Raj was born in India and, at a young age, immigrated to Canada with his parents and younger brother. His family decided to settle in Northeast Calgary. His mother and father, a professional engineer in India, worked hard at several jobs to provide a better life for their family.
Raj was your typical Northeast Calgary kid. He loved to spend his time shooting hoops with his friends and playing hockey and cricket at Prairie Winds Park. His first part time job in high school was working at a local convenience store.
After graduating from Lester B. Pearson high school, Raj attended the University of Calgary, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations – following that he attended the Schulich School of Engineering, where he obtained a degree in Chemical Engineering.
Life in the community
Raj is happily married with two young boys. Prior to his election, he worked for a leading oil and gas company in Calgary for over ten years.
Since his days as a teenager, Raj has been actively engaged in his local community. He has been a regular worshiper and volunteer at the local Sikh temple in Martindale. Raj continues to support many different community initiatives. He has mentored many young professionals, and he has helped them find jobs here in Calgary. He also works with seniors and newcomers and teaches them computer skills, and helps them with their job searches at the Calgary Public Library Saddletowne branch.
Raj also served on the board of directors for Northeast Family Connections, where he oversaw the development and implementation of programs that helped local families and youth. Through this, Raj gained a greater understanding of the challenges faced by many families in the Northeast, and in particular, those facing urban youth.
