Affordable housing is a growing concern in Ward 5 as rising costs continue to impact families, seniors, and newcomers. As a ward 5 candidate in 2021, I committed to advocating for more affordable and sustainable housing options while ensuring that development is responsible, well-planned, and aligned with the needs of our community.
As your Ward 5 City Councillor, I have been actively working with stakeholders, non-profits, and all levels of government to increase housing supply while maintaining accessibility for low-income families. I have also been pushing for transit-oriented development and infrastructure improvements to support affordability and livability in our ward. However, I believe that development must be balanced with community needs. That is why I voted against the Westwinds development project, which lacked proper public consultation and failed to include necessary infrastructure upgrades to support increased density. To further address the affordable housing crisis in Ward 5, I am committed to exploring innovative solutions that prioritize inclusivity and sustainability. This includes advocating for mixed-income developments that create diverse communities where families of all income levels can thrive together. I am also focused on incentivizing developers to include affordable units in new projects and promoting adaptive reuse of existing buildings to increase housing options without compromising our neighborhood's character. By fostering partnerships with local businesses and organizations, we can create a holistic approach to housing that not only addresses affordability but also enhances the overall quality of life in our ward. Together, we can ensure that all residents have access to safe, affordable housing while maintaining the vibrant community we cherish.
In addition to housing, I am advocating for sustainable urban planning solutions, including transit enhancements and public amenities, to ensure that growth in Ward 5 does not come at the expense of existing residents. My office continues to work on policies that address housing security while preserving the character and functionality of our communities.
